The Long Way Home

Leo watched his bus disappear around the corner. The next one would not arrive for twenty minutes. For once, he decided to walk.
He took a narrow street he had never noticed before. There was a little bakery, a sleeping cat, and a woman watering flowers outside her door. The air smelled of fresh bread.
At the bakery, he bought a small roll. It was still warm. He ate it slowly as he walked past a park where children were playing.
He reached home later than usual, but he did not mind. The following evening, the bus arrived on time. Leo let it go.
